Abdominal aortic aneurysm

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a swelling (aneurysm) of the aorta – the main blood vessel that leads away from the heart, down through the abdomen to the rest of the body. AAA screening looks for aneurysms (bulges in blood vessels) to monitor or treat them.

Breast screening

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. It starts when cells in the breast grow in an uncontrolled way and form a tumour. As the tumour grows, cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body. Breast screening uses X-rays, called mammograms, to find cancers at an early stage when they are too small to see or feel.

Diabetic eye screening

Diabetic eye screening is a test to check for a condition called diabetic retinopathy. This is when diabetes causes the small blood vessels in the retina to leak or become blocked. Diabetic eye screening is offered to people aged 12 years and over with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. It is an important part of diabetic care as it can find changes to the retina before any symptoms of sight loss develop.
